ABOUT THIS CONCERT
“Cologne, a city of churches, monasteries, and chapels, has lived to see its first true scandal…Waves of moral outrage engulf the city.” So read one German music journal following the 1926 premiere of Bartók’s ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin. Combining a gritty urban setting, explosive musical score, and lurid plot rife with seduction, lust, and murder, the production outraged audiences and was immediately banned by the Mayor of Cologne. Thankfully, Bartók’s white-hot musical score remains: it’s a marvel to behold—especially live—and these concerts are your chance to experience every note. Plus, Yefim Bronfman tackles music’s “Mt. Everest”: Rachmaninoff’s lush and legendary Piano Concerto No. 3.
