ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Join us for an evening of Indonesian Gamelan with Houston’s Gamelan of the New Moon, paired with Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor, featuring members of the Symphony.
- Gamelan is a centuries-old traditional Indonesian form of music, primarily made up of percussion instruments such as gongs, xylophones, and hand-played drums
- Debussy saw a Gamelan performance at the 1889 World’s Fair and was enthralled by it. He was inspired to incorporate elements of Gamelan in his String Quartet, which you’ll hear performed by the Symphony’s MuChen Hsieh, Tong Yan, Samuel Pedersen, and Louis-Marie Fardet
- Following the performance, Gamelan of the New Moon will host a Gamelan Petting Zoo, where you can try the instruments!
Join us for the Songs of the Earth Festival, February 10–19, 2023.
