Middle School Concerts

Middle School Concerts

The Middle School Student Concerts, presented by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, are part of the Harry and Cora Sue Mach Student Concert Series and are 55-minute, full orchestra concerts, presented in Jones Hall during the school day for students in grade 6-8 band and orchestra.

Students will hear the Houston Symphony perform and learn about the orchestra, with the goal of furthering students' involvement with music.

These concerts facilitate students’ acquisition of active listening skills.

The piece is No. 1 Scène from Swan Lake, Opus 20a by Pytor Tchaikovsky. Below you will find arrangements of this excerpt for string orchestra and concert band.

In the introduction to the 2025-26 Middle School Concerts video, Gonzalo and Lindsey explore the roles of melody and accompaniment, demonstrating how these musical elements interact.

Accompaniment can take many forms – rhythm, arpeggios, chords, or any other forms that support the melody. Each part in the resources below includes the melody, an arpeggiated accompaniment, and a chordal accompaniment. These can be played with the full ensemble, in small groups, or even with just two instruments!

Try different combinations to discover how melody and accompaniment work together!
