This weekend, the Houston Symphony presents a one-of-a-kind fusion of music and VR technology when artist Topher Sipes creates breathtaking original imagery with Google’s 3D paint brush as the Symphony performs beautiful music, live. The program features romantic selections that will provide the perfect soundtrack to your Valentine’s date night. Take a sneak peek at some of the music included on the program, and join us this weekend to hear these selections, and more, performed live by the Houston Symphony, and to see what Topher creates!
1. Glinka, Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila
Based on a poem by Pushkin, Glinka’s opera Ruslan and Lyudmila tells a story of newlyweds separated by an evil sorcerer and, ultimately, happily reunited. The story is set against a backdrop of colorful characters and Russian folklore, and the opera’s high-spirited Overture opens this weekend’s performances.
2. Debussy, “Clair de Lune” from Suite bergamasque
Dreamy and evocative, this iconic piece by Claude Debussy conjures up the romantic and magical atmosphere of a moonlit night.
3. Bizet, “Habanera” from Carmen Suite No. 2
Synonymous with opera’s ultimate femme fatale, this seductive aria muses on the fickle nature of love. Listen to Maria Callas sing it below, then hear the Symphony perform an orchestral version this weekend.
4. Tchaikovsky, “Danse espagnole” from Swan Lake Suite
Swan Lake is one of ballet’s most timeless love stories, and Tchaikovsky’s passionate score is the perfect complement. The Symphony performs “Danse espagnole” from Swan Lake at this weekend’s performances.
