Romeo and Juliet + Shostakovich 5
From Verona’s star-crossed lovers to Shostakovich’s triumph and Reid’s Floodplain, this program spans passion, power, and transformation.
About This Concert
“In fair Verona, where we lay our scene…” Sampled in countless films and television series, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet provides a passionate and sweeping soundtrack for the ill-fated, star-crossed lovers. Premiered in 1937, Shostakovich’s Fifth was immediately received with “triumphal success”, receiving a 30-minute standing ovation. Ellen Reid’s transformational Floodplain explores both the magnificence and consequential destruction of mighty river deltas.
