Meet the Staff: Rolanda Gregory Q&A
In January, the Houston Symphony welcomed Rolanda Gregory as its new Chief Marketing Officer. A Texas native and University of Houston alum, Rolanda joins the Symphony leadership team after most recently serving as the Vice President of Marketing for the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas. Prior to that position, Rolanda also held senior roles with FedExForum and the Memphis Grizzlies, and SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. With extensive experience in audience development, brand strategy, digital innovation, and large-scale entertainment experiences, she now returns to Houston to help steward the Symphony in its new era of growth. We recently sat down with Rolanda to learn more about what drew her to the Symphony and learn more about the person behind the impressive resume.
What drew you to the Houston Symphony, and what excites you most about being here?
When I initially saw this role was open, I wanted to apply because it really drove home the experience I have. While working at the AT&T Performing Arts Center, I had the opportunity to work with our resident companies, as well as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and I was also in the process of relocating back to Houston. It felt like a great culmination of being able to go back to Houston and work in an organization that’s very similar to what I was just doing.
I’m also just really passionate about orchestras. My first experience with an orchestra was in the first or second grade—I remember getting on a bus and going to see my first orchestral concert as part of a school program. The next year I took violin lessons at school, unfortunately we didn’t have the school funding to continue it. But that moment really sparked something for me. Even though I’m nowhere near being a musician, I’m really excited to now support an orchestra at this level.
You went to college in Houston— how does it feel to be back in the city?
Houston has changed a lot! It’s all very different, but the energy and spirit of the city are still the same. I’m reacquainting myself with the museums, the Zoo, the Arts District—really everything Houston has to offer. Since so much has changed, I’m excited to experience it again as if it’s the first time.”
Outside of work, how do you like to spend your time?
I love to travel! I have family that lives in different countries, and at one point my son was also living in China, so I love to visit people all over the world. One of my favorite travel destinations is Shanghai—it’s such a fascinating, fast, buzzy city—I just love being there and feeling the energy. The Amalfi Coast is absolutely gorgeous and Ireland is incredible—I love touring the castles and learning about their history. I also have family that lives in France, so I travel there once every two or three years to visit.
Closer to home, if I’m not doing anything big on a weekend, I’m probably lounging and watching Netflix with a nice glass of wine.
What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?
It really depends on my mood. If I need a boost, I’ll listen to something energetic—hip hop, something fast-paced. If I’m relaxing, I’m likely listening to jazz. If you step into my office, I’ve got classical music playing in the background because it helps me stay on task.
Any other fun facts that you’d like Symphony donors to know?
During my SeaWorld days, I was kissed by a beluga whale! Being up close with marine life was so exciting and so otherworldly. I’m also a vegan and I’m always looking for great vegan restaurants in Houston. If anyone has recommendations, I’m all ears!
