HOUSTON (May 10, 2017) – The Houston Symphony and National Geographic Live present Climbing Dreams, the last event in a dynamic four-part speaker series featuring some of the world’s most fascinating explorers, scientists, filmmakers and adventurers. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Jones Hall.
The evening’s featured speaker, climber and National Geographic Explorer Mike Libecki, will take audiences on a thrilling journey, sharing captivating stories about the secluded and unique places, people and experiences he has embraced from his expeditions to climb the most remote and exotic locations on the planet.
Named Men’s Journal 25 Most Adventurous Men of the Past 25 Years, Libecki has completed over 60 expeditions and has made first ascents on all seven continents in places like Afghanistan, Antarctica, Baffin Island, Guyana, Greenland, China, Madagascar, Kyrgysztan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Venezuela, Yemen, Indonesia, Africa and many islands around the globe.
In 2013, Libecki was named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and was featured in the magazine’s cover story, “Untamed Antarctica,” for his treacherous and unprecedented summit of Bertha’s Tower in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica.
Libecki is the recipient of countless grants and awards for his pioneering feats in climbing and exploration, including two Shipton-Tilman Grants from GORE-TEX®, four Mugs Stump Awards, and two Helly Hansen Awards from the American Alpine Club.
