ABOUT THIS CONCERT
In 1917, Gustav Mahler suffered a series of hardships: the death of his four-year-old daughter, the loss of his post as director of the Vienna Court Opera, and the diagnosis of a serious heart condition. From the depths of tragedy emerged one of his most stunningly powerful masterpieces, the “song-symphony” Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth). World-renowned vocalists Sasha Cooke and Clay Hilley join Music Director Designate, Juraj Valčuha and the orchestra for this soul-stirring meditation on life and death, featuring poignant text drawn from ancient Chinese poetry. Evocative music of contemporary composer Qigang Chen opens the performance.
