Sibelius’s bracing Violin Concerto runs the gamut from hushed landscapes of icy, ethereal beauty to an invigorating, hot-blooded “polonaise for polar bears.” Multifaceted virtuoso Viktoria Mullova, who captured the world’s attention after winning both the International Tchaikovsky and Sibelius Competitions, joins the Houston Symphony. Nostalgic reveries soar on wings of effortless melody and opulent beauty in Rachmaninoff’s extraordinary final work.
