ABOUT THIS CONCERT
No concerto unleashes the singing sweetness or heroic power of the violin more profoundly or poetically. Breathtaking virtuoso Gil Shaham scales the towering heights of Brahms’ masterpiece, widely considered the pinnacle of the repertoire. Music is your gateway to velvet-black skies, celestial grandeur and starry expanses in a monumental world premiere by Houston Symphony Composer-in-Residence Jimmy López Bellido.
The Houston Symphony’s commitment to new music and continually expanding the symphonic repertoire sees the world premiere in 2019–2020 of a Houston Symphony commission from Composer-in-Residence Jimmy López Bellido, in the third and final year of his residency. López’s Symphony No. 2, Ad Astra (December 2019), takes its inspiration from a subject near and dear to Houston’s heart: the space program and humankind’s exploration of the stars.
Pre-Concert Activities: Attend the Prelude pre-concert discussion, held 45 minutes prior to each Classical concert. Prelude is led by our Musical Ambassador Carlos Andrés Botero, and sometimes features guest artists or orchestra members.
Saturday night attendees are invited to stay late for an “Out of This World” after party!
Sip celestial inspired cocktails, dance the night away to DJ tracks under a luminous moon globe, and mingle with Houston Symphony musicians! Your ticket to the concert is all you need for entry.
