Chilean conductor José Luis Domínguez is a prominent talent on the international orchestral and operatic stages. His conducting is described as “unrivaled, magnificent and with exemplary gesturing” (El Mercurio), and he frequents prominent stages across the globe.

José Luis currently serves as artistic director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Youth Orchestras, where he conducts the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Academy Orchestra. He is a regular guest conductor with Opéra Saint-Étienne in France and was recently invited to be the Artistic Director of the Musical Encounters International Music Festival of La Serena, Chile beginning January 2020. José Luis previously held the position of music director of Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional Juvenil (National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Chile) and resident director with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago (Philharmonic Orchestra of Santiago), one of the most prominent symphonic, ballet, and opera orchestras in Latin America in residence at the Municipal de Santiago.

Recent commissions include a new ballet titled, “La Casa de Los Espíritus (The House of Spirits)” based on the bestselling novel by Isabel Allende. It premiered in September 2019 at the Municipal de Santiago-Ópera Nacional de Chile with the Ballet de Santiago and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago, in which José Luis conducted as well. In addition, Jason DePue, violinist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, commissioned José Luis to write a piece for violin and piano, titled “Aitona” that will be included in DePue’s upcoming debut solo album in 2019.

Upcoming conducting engagements include the Houston Symphony and return appearances with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra) at Teatro Colón, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile (Symphony Orchestra of Chile), the Orquesta Sinfónica Universidad de La Serena (University of La Serena Symphony Orchestra), and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Recent appearances have included the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia (National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia), Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago (Philharmonic Orchestra of Santiago), Opéra Saint-Étienne, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Peru (Lima University Symphony Orchestra in Peru), Staatsopernorchester de Braunschweig in Germany, Orquesta Sinfonica UNCuyo (UNCuyo Symphony Orchestra) in Mendoza, Argentina, Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias (Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias) in Spain, and Temple University Symphony Orchestra in Philadelphia.

José Luis has collaborated with noted artists: Renée Fleming, Andrés Diaz, Ray Chen, Sergio Tiempo, Ai Nihira, Verónica Villarroel, Luciana D’Intino, Woo-Yun Kim, and Daniel Binelli. He recently released two critically acclaimed Naxos recordings; one of his own composition, the ballet The Legend of Joaquín Murieta, and the other, with the music of Enrique Soro with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile (Symphony Orchestra of Chile). Upcoming commissions include an oboe concerto, a violin concerto, harp concerto and a cello concerto.
