High School Residencies

 

  The Houston Symphony is working with eight schools through an intensive residency program that will take place over one academic year. The Houston Symphony strives to inspire and motivate students to continue playing their instruments with the highest of musical goals in mind, thereby increasing academic achievement and 21st century influences. The band & orchestra directors and administrators from the schools selected work with the Houston Symphony’s education staff to determine the opportunities that would best support the needs of the ensemble(s)/students within each school.



2016-17 Selected High Schools: 

Conroe High School -- Conroe ISD

Cypress Ridge High School -- Cyfair ISD 

Dobie High School -- Pasadena ISD 

Elsik High School -- Alief ISD

Elkins High School -- Fort Bend ISD

North Shore High School  -- Galena Park ISD

Spring High School -- Spring Branch  ISD

Waltrip High Schol -- Houston ISD


Goals:

  • To ensure students possess a foundational knowledge of symphonic music
  • To develop the ability for students, parents, teachers, and administrators to express themselves creatively through music
  • To establish music as an essential element of the school community
  • To motivate students to continue playing their instruments with the highest of musical goals
  • To bring students into the Houston Symphony family
  • To increase student fluency of collaboration, creativity, problem-solving and determination
  • To spur increased collaboration among the music ensembles within the school
