Middle School Concerts
The Middle School Concerts at Jones Hall provide an orchestral experience for grades 6-8 band and orchestra students. These one-hour concerts will strengthen students’ appreciation for music by exploring the events and situations that have inspired composers throughout history. Understanding the unique and influential role that composers play in our culture can provide motivation for students as they continue their instrumental education.
Mussorgsky wrote Pictures at an Exhibition after he came across a collection of artwork by his recently-deceased friend, Victor Hartmann. He made this collection of artwork into a musical work for piano, and Ravel added color to this music through the varying instruments within the full orchestra. Similarly, Ravel wrote the ballet score Le Tombeau de Couperin for piano, and later re-wrote this music for full orchestra. This concert will demonstrate how the musicians in the orchestra can change this piece through varying styles, colors and interpretations.
