Instrument Petting Zoo
The Houston Symphony encourages creativity, future enjoyment and participation in music! Led by trained Houston Symphony education staff and volunteers, children of all ages are invited to get up close and personal with the orchestral instruments they see professionally played on stage. Brass, woodwind, strings, and percussion instruments are on hand for you to hold, touch, bow, blow, and play! The Instrument Petting Zoo inhabits Jones Hall prior to all Family Series Concerts, Community Concerts, during Day of Music, as well as classrooms and other venues throughout Houston. The Instrument Petting Zoo is made possible through support from the Houston Symphony League and a partnership with Fort Bend Music Center.
IPZ Volunteers help children (and children at heart) produce sounds on and handle musical instruments, as well as offer encouragement. Volunteers should be prepared for a high-energy and dynamic learning experience. Instrument-specific musical proficiency is not required, but a certain level of comfort with handling instruments is helpful. Most important is an encouraging attitude and a desire to work with kids!
