ENGIE Community Connections Program
With our organization’s strategic vision to become relevant and accessible to the Greater Houston community, the ENGIE Community Connections program helps us broaden our musical reach throughout the diverse Houston population.
The ENGIE Community Connections program provides opportunities for musicians to voluntarily give their time and talents to these services at no cost to the community. By providing multiple touchpoints throughout the year to strength partnerships, we are seeing significant relationships develop between the Houston Symphony musicians and their fellow Houstonians. Some of the partnerships include:
Over the course of the year-long residency, several Community Connections ensembles perform for the students to engage them in active listening and to provide an up-close look at the different instruments in the wind, brass and percussion families before seeing them perform at the student concert.
Musicians provide sectionals or chambers music coaching sessions and in-school chamber performances for our select high school residencies. For the 2015-16 season, they served high schools in 8 school districts in Greater Houston.
Music and Wellness
In partnership with Texas Children’s Hospital, musicians provide bedside visits to patients undergoing treatment and also participate in the Purple Songs Can Fly program which provides a musical outlet for the many children being treated for cancer and blood disorders at Texas Children's Cancer Center.
Youth Orchestra Partnerships
Virtuosi of Houston received sectional coaching sessions in preparation for our annual Salute to Educators Concert, in which the youth orchestra members perform side-by-side with the full Houston Symphony at Jones Hall.
