Preliminary Round Repertoire Requirements

Preliminary Round Recording Submission:  All application materials should be submitted by Sunday, January 15, 2017 through Acceptd. Contestants must submit Preliminary Round audio (only) recordings consisting of the required work for each instrument (below), in addition to two contrasting movements from the list of Approved Concertos.  Repertoire title, movement (if separate) and composer should be clearly labeled on the title of the recording.  Please eliminate your name from the recording title. A field of approximately ten semi-finalists will be chosen from the preliminary round.  

Preliminary recordings submitted should include: 

  • The required work for contestant’s instrument (listed below); piano accompaniment is required if scored.
  • Two contrasting movements from the list of Approved Concertos, piano accompaniment is optional. These movements can be from one piece or from two different concertos. If there are not movements within the concerto you select (i.e. Debussy Rhapsody), please submit only this piece or a portion of this piece along with a contrasting movement from another concerto.

Violin

  • J.S. Bach: Sonatas 1, 2 or 3
    Movements 1 and 2
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Viola

  • Hindemith: Viola Sonata, Op. 25 No. 1
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Cello

  • J.S. Bach: Any Cello Suite (Complete)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Double Bass

  • J.S. Bach: Any Cello Suite 
    Any two movements (on bass)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Flute

  • Mozart: Any Flute Concerto (Complete - accompaniment required)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Oboe

  • J.S. Bach: Sonata in G minor, BWV 1030 D (accompaniment required)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Clarinet

  • Brahms: Clarinet Sonatas No. 1 & 2 (accompaniment required)
    No. 1 - Mvt 1: beginning to recap.
               Mvt 2: in entirety
    No. 2 - Mvt 1: beginning to recap.
               Mvt 3: beginning through graziosa var.
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Bassoon

  • Saint-Saens: Bassoon Sonata (Complete - accompaniment required)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Horn

  • Schumann: Adagio and Allegro (accompaniment required)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Trumpet

  • Any etude by Paudert, Charlier or Duhem
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Trombone

  • Lars-Erik Larsson: Trombone Concertino (Complete - accompaniment required)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Tuba

  • Persichetti: Serenade No. 12 for Solo Tuba (Complete)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Harp

  • Carlos Sauzedo: Variations on a Theme in Ancient Style (complete)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment optional)

Marimba

  • J.S. Bach - any two movements
  • Two movements from list of approved concertos (accompaniment preferred)

Piano

  • Beethoven: Any Piano Sonata (complete)
  • Two contrasting movements from list of approved concertos
