Featuring the incredible Houston Symphony Chorus, our “Vocal Masterworks” package also includes sublime showstoppers of the operatic world with soprano Nicole Heaston, who guides audiences through evocative sound paintings in Haydn’s The Creation. Experience the power of the podium with our “Maestro Masters” package. First, Andrés Orozco-Estrada injects the lyrical purity of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 into our season opener. Then, we’re reuniting two former music directors: Hans Graf, who is at the helm of Pictures at an Exhibition, helps us celebrate composer John Adams’ 70th birthday. Also, Christoph Eschenbach returns with his authoritative interpretation of Bruckner’s Symphony No 1.

Escape with us to the Mediterranean with a 3-concert package that evokes sounds and
flavors of Spain, Italy and Greece. Hear Bach like never before when Greek violinist
Leonidas Kavakos plays his Violin Concerto in A minor. Be swept away with the complete balletic score from The Three-Cornered Hat by Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. Finally, enjoy not one, but two of Respighi’s tone poems, The Fountains of Rome and The Pines of Rome.

George Gershwin once proclaimed, “In composing, we combine what we know of music with what we feel.” Our “Great American Works” package allows audiences to feel the rich history of this great country, through favorites such as Gershwin’s An American in Paris; John Adams’ WWII-inspired Doctor Atomic Symphony; and our Latin American influences as heard in Gabriela Lena Frank’s new Requiem, a Houston Symphony Commission and World Premiere.

STEVEN’S FANTASTIC FOUR

Feel the boundless energy of Principal POPS Conductor Designate with our “Steven’s Fantastic Four” package, featuring four concerts led by Steven Reineke, who has been touted for being an “amazing collabora[tor] with musicians” (The Huffington Post). Steven and the orchestra open the season with Linda Eder, who pays tribute to icon Judy Garland. Then, Steven returns just in time for the holidays to take the reins of our Very Merry Pops celebration. We’re bringing back Tony®-nominated Broadway star Joshua Henry for a spectacularly soulful Stevie Wonder program. And Steven’s final concert weekend this season features the always-popular Pink Martini.

Our “Stage & Screen” package combines music from film and the Broadway stage. Linda Eder’s tribute to Judy Garland includes selections from movie musicals Meet Me in St. Louis and The Wizard of Oz. We’re welcoming back the incredible artists of Cirque de la Symphonie who will be choreographing their acts to film scores like Gone With the Wind and The Magnificent Seven. The Houston Symphony celebrates a night of espionage with Bond & Beyond. And we bid farewell to Principal POPS Conductor Michael Krajewski and his incredible tenure with Classic Broadway, including favorites from composers Rodgers and Hammerstein and Lerner and Loewe.

If you love powerful vocalists, our “Spectacular Solo Acts” package is for you. Linda Eder returns to the Houston Symphony to pay tribute to the late, great Judy Garland. Fan favorite Tony DeSare has planned an all-piano program, which includes selections from Billy Joel, Elton John and George Gershwin. Then, multi-talented Broadway performer Joshua Henry dazzles audiences with hits like “Superstition,” and “For Once in My Life” in A Salute to Stevie Wonder.

MIKE’S FAREWELL

We bid farewell to Michael Krajewski, who has been at the helm of our BBVA Compass POPS Series since 2000. Be part of his farewell season with a spectacular 3-concert lineup. Folk-rock duo AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle capture the essence of Simon and Garfunkel’s 1960s counterculture harmonies. Then, witness the amazing acrobatics and athleticism of Cirque de la Symphonie, who perform their acts to film scores. Our series concludes with Classic Broadway, which celebrates Mike’s final concert weekend as Principal POPS Conductor.
