African-American Leadership Council

AALCIn order to increase the relevance of the Houston Symphony to the many diverse communities that make up Houston, the African-American Leadership Council (AALC) comprised of business, education, and community leaders in the African American community was created.

The AALC was started by Brodrick Hill, a former member of the Houston Symphony Board of Trustees, and member of the Symphony's Community Partnerships Committee, by request of Robert A. Peiser, President Houston Symphony Society Board of Trustees.

The purpose of the African-American Leadership Council, is to help the Houston Symphony organization meet the goal of expand the diversity of its audience in Jones Hall, provide meaningful musical experiences to the African-American community through a number of diversity and educational partnerships.

The council meets with members of the Houston Symphony Board of Director's, and staff members to explore possible educational means, and programming opportunities, etc., that will lead to better awareness of the dynamics of the African-American communities' needs as it pertains to its music needs and music education desires. Some of these efforts have lead to Summer, and Holiday concerts performed at community churches and schools by the Houston Symphony. In 2014, one of these community projects is the formation of the CityWide Community Grassroots Chorus.
